What does idghaam mean?

Idgham is one of the most essential tajweed rules that people should recite the Quran with.

Idghaam in tajweed

means to merge the last letter in a word with the first one in the next word, which happens by meeting a non-vowel letter with a vowel letter then the two letters become one emphasized letter of the second type.

Idghaam letters in Arabic

Letters causing idghaam of noon sakinah and tanween are:(َ ٌَرَ-مَ-لَُ-و-ن-ي) if one of these six letters appears at the start of a word that immediately follows one that ends in noon saakin or tanween, the noon merges into the following letter, this is idghaam.

idgham mutlaq

idgham mutlaq means a complete merging of one letter into the other so that there is nothing remaining of the first letter. The second letter becomes emphasized with a shadda to indicate the merging of the first letter into the second

Idghaam has two types:-

  1. Idghaam without Ghunnah.
  2. Idghaam of noon saakinah with Ghunnah.

What is the Ghunnah?

Ghunnah is the most important tajweed rule, that is the sound emitted through the nose, specifically when pronouncing the letters Noon نون and Meem ميم.

Learning how and when to produce the Ghunnah is essential to recite the Quran with tajweed rules correctly.

There are two types of idghaam with ghunnah:

  1. Full idghaam, if letters (ن-م), the reader should loud your voice.

Examples of a full idghaam bi ghunnah:

و مِن وَاقٍ وَاَلِدٍ وَمَاوَلَد
م مِن مَّآءٍ قَومُُ مُسْرِفُونَ
ن وَمَابِكم مِّن نِعْمَةٍ شَيْءٍ نُكُرٍ

Idghaam without Ghunnah

Ith-haar Al-Mutlaq:

It’s as “Showing Absolutely”,

That means reading the noon letter with totally pure and perfect pronunciation.
