the revelation of surah Al-Shams, as there is nothing in the books of interpretation to indicate the existence of a reason for its revelation, such as the book Asbab al-Nuzul by al-Wahidi, and the book Lubbab al-Nuqul fi Asbab al-Nuzul by Imam al-Suyuti, but it was revealed to complete the final chapters of Surat Al-Balad and to clarify the fate of the infidels whom Allah mentioned at the end of Surah Al-Balad and the punishment they received in this world, which is their destruction.

Ash-Shams surah begins with the oath with several astronomical phenomena, including the sun, after which the surah was named, and then the human soul، after that, Allah mentioned the fate of the Thamud tribe, to whom Allah sent His Prophet Saleh, peace be upon him, to call for monotheism and the worship of Allah. And  Allah sent them a sign, which is the she-camel of Salih, who forbade them from slaughtering it, but they refused the invitation and killed the she-camel, so Allah sent them His torment and destroyed them all except for those who followed the Prophet Salih and believed in Allah.

What is the meaning of Al-Shams?

The word Al-Shams means the sun.

The sun ( Arabic: الشمس ) is the main star that revolves around the earth, and all planets of the solar system.

Without the sun, the day and night would not have passed, the rains would not fall, the trees would grow, the flowers would open, or the fruits would ripen. It is a huge ball of flame, affected by man wherever he goes, and if it is absent from him, his life will be turned upside down, and it is the secret of life on the globe, and the source of all-natural resources and economic activities.

The sun is the source of light, heat, and energy for the earth, the planets and moons in the solar system, and the rotation of the sun and other celestial bodies in astronomy.

[The Sun]: well-known, and it is in the fourth astronomy, it cuts the astronomy in a year, for each sign has a month, and its nature is hot and dry, and it is happy to look, jinx in comparison, daytime denotes masculinity, leadership, and excellencies, it has days on Sunday, and nights on Thursday night, Allah said: {And the sun, the moon, and the stars are subjected.}

When the great ones were likened to the sun, the sun was in interpretation an angel, because it is the greatest thing in the atmosphere, or an imam or a scholar of its light.

The sun was chosen to clarify the relationship between outer space and the celestial bodies that carry it and between humans. Everyone struggles to prove power and control, but despite that, everything goes according to a cosmic system made by Allah. So is the case between humans who always struggle between right and wrong, and the winner is always the one who satisfies Allah.

What is the main theme of surah al shams?

The main purpose of shams surah revolves around the greatness of the signs of Allah in the universe, such as the sun, with which Allah began the surah and swore a great oath with it, followed by his division by the moon, day, night, heaven and earth, all of which are signs of Allah that indicate his wonderful work, and that man, with all his knowledge, is still unable to reach its secrets as well as the human soul, which is one of the greatest and most complex signs of Allah.

Among the other purposes of the surah as shams are to clarify the fate of the creation separately, so we find a group of them seeking Allah’s pleasure and purifying themselves of sins and misdeeds, and another group committing what they like of sins and following their desires and the abomination of Shitan, but Allah gives each person what he deserves of reward or punishment, so He rewards the good with his work and destroys the unjust and the unbeliever for his work.

Where was surah shams revealed?

Surah shams are one of the Surahs of the Noble Quran that was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Makkah Al-Mukarramah, before the migration to Medina. And its arrangement in the Noble Quran is ninety-one, and it is one of the shortest surahs, with 15 verses.

When was surah shams revealed?

The style of surah as shams and the topics that it talked about indicate that it was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, when he was in Makkah al-Mukarramah at a time when opposition and rejection of the Messenger of Allah’s call for monotheism and the worship of Allah intensified.

Is surah al shams Makki or Madani?

Ash-shams is a Meccan surah because, as we mentioned before, it was revealed to the Messenger Muhammad (PBUH) in Makkah al-Mukarramah before the Messenger migrated to Medina.

                وَالشَّمْسِ وَضُحَاهَا (1)

Surat Al-Shams: The talk of Jaber, who in al sahihain, is that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Muaz”could you pray with” swam the name of your highest Allah” and the sun “and the night if he fears”? “. Mujahid said, “And the sun made its ablution.” Ibn Jarir said, and it is correct to say, “Allah swears by the sun and its day because the light of the apparent sun is the day.

Allah swore by the sun and its brightness, and its light because of the great verses that indicate the perfection of Allah’s power, glory, and the perfection of His knowledge and mercy. There are verses in this sun that some people do not realize. If the sun rises, how much energy will it save on the world? Thousands of millions are saved because they dispense with this energy, and how much the earth gets from its heat, from the ripening of fruits, and the sweetness of trees, what only Allah knows, and he obtains many benefits in it that can’t be counted.

                وَالْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَاهَا (2)

(And the moon if it follows it) Mujahid said: He followed it. Al-Awfi said, on the authority of Ibn Abbas: (And the moon if it recites it), he said: It recites the day. Qatadah said: (If it follows it) the night of the crescent moon when the sun has fallen, the crescent will be seen. Ibn Zayd said: He recites it in the first half of the month, then she recites it. It leads in the last half of the month. Malik said, on the authority of Zaid bin Aslam: If the Night of Decree follows it.

As long as the verse bears this and this, the rule in the science of interpretation is that if the verse bears two meanings that do not conflict between them, then both must be taken into consideration because taking into account both meanings is broader in meaning. We say: If he follows it in the walk; Because the moon is later every day than the sun, so while you find it at the beginning of the month close to it in the west, so in the middle of the month it is farther from it in the east because it is later every day. Or if it is followed by the illumination, because if the moonlight is absent, especially in the second quarter to the end of the third quarter, the moonlight is visible.

Meaning: If seven days have passed until seven days remain, the light is strong, but in the first and last seven, it is weak, and in any case, the illumination of the moon does not come until after the light of the sun has gone as it appears. Allah swore by the sun because it is the sign of the day, and by the moon because it is the sign of the night.

                وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّاهَا (3)

Allah says, “And the day when it clears it.” Mujahid said: It lights up. Qatadah said: If the day covers it. Ibn Jarir said: Some of the people of Arabic interpreted that as meaning, and the day when the darkness clears it because the word denotes it. It any simple, but that is the first and correct interpretation.

(And the day when it clears it) If he clears the earth and makes it clear and clear; Because it is a day in which things become clear and clear.

                وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَاهَا (4)

Allah saying “and the night covers it” means when the sun covers it when it sets, and the horizons are darkened. The rest of Ibn al-Walid said about Safwan Tell me Yazid bin The Dhajama said: If the night came from the Jalla, Ghashi Abadi, the great, and the night, which he created, which he created. Narrated by Ibn Abi Hatim.

Meaning that when night covers the ground, it is like a furnished cloak to cover things, such as someone who rides a plane and watches the smoke from its height, while the ground is black beneath it due to the absence of the sun.

                وَالسَّمَاءِ وَمَا بَنَاهَا (5)

( Ma- ما)here may be a source for the meaning of the sky and its construction as Qatada said. But Mujahid’s saying that it may mean the sky and its builder and both are inseparable, so the building is lifting.

meaning that: the sky and its construction; Because the sky is great in its height, capacity and strength, and other things that are among the signs of Allah in it, and its construction is also a tight building.

        وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَاهَا (6)

Mujahid said: He swept it. Al-Awfi said on the authority of Ibn Abbas, “And he created it. And Ali bin Abi Talha said on the authority of Ibn Abbas that he divided it. Mujahid, Qatada, Al dahaq, Ibn Saleh and Ibn Zaid, said he smashed it “meaning spreading it”.Al-Jawhari said his tahahwah is the same as his dahuth, i.edeathspread.

Meaning: Allah made the earth flat, it is not too soft and not too hard, but it is suitable for living on it between soft and hard.

                (وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّاهَا (7

What is meant by the verse is that Allah created the soul upright, on the right fitrah.

That is, Allah is the one who created the human soul and made it on sound instinct, i.e. the face that suits the human being and suits his conditions, and made his idea of ​​monotheism and sincerity.

                (فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَاهَا (8 

Meaning that Allah guided the soul to immorality and piety and guided it to its destiny, as Ibn Abbas, Mujahid, Qatadah, and Saeed bin Jubayr said that Allah made it clear to it good and evil. Ibn Zaid said: “He made her gone and his fugitives. Allah began with immorality before piety, even though it is the best, to take into account the breaks in the verses.

Immorality is what corresponds to piety, and it means disobedience to Allah, while piety is obedience and pleasing Allah.

The wicked one is disobedient the one who has departed from common sense, which is obedience to Allah.

                قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَنْ زَكَّاهَا (9)

It is likely to be the meaning that has succeeded in obedience to Allah.

He also said Qatada and landed by the decent ethics and vices and raised him about Mujahid, Akrama, and Said bin Jubair and the saying of the Allah            “قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَنْ تَزَكَّى وَذَكَرَ اِسْم رَبّه فَصَلَّى “.

Success is to win what is desired and to escape from what is feared. As for purification, it is to stop oneself from polytheism and committing sins so that it remains pure.

                وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنْ دَسَّاهَا (10)

In the sense that he is disappointed and lost by the one who neglected himself and underestimated it by committing sins and staying away from guidance and obedience to Allah.

That is why we always pray to Allah to be steadfast in obedience in this world and the hereafter.

                كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَاهَا (11)

Allah tells us on the authority of Thamud that they denied their Messenger Saleh because of what they were doing of tyranny and oppression. Muhammad ibn Ka’b and Mujahid and Qatadah said, “overwhelmed her” meaning all of them.

They denied in their hearts what their Messenger brought to them of the call to truth and guidance.

They overpowered her, meaning her tyranny and arrogance, and the letter (B-ب) here is due to causation, that is: because she was a tyrant, she lied to the Messenger.

                إِذِ انْبَعَثَ أَشْقَاهَا (12)

This is a statement of the tyranny that Allah Almighty mentioned, and that was when its wretched ones were resurrected. And {when he was resurrected} means: go quickly. {the most wretched}, meaning the most miserable, Thamud, meaning: the most miserable among them.

The most wretched of the tribe, Qadar bin Salif, the barren camel, Uhaymar Thamud.

                فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ نَاقَةَ اللَّهِ وَسُقْيَاهَا (13)

The Messenger of Allah, Salih, peace be upon him, said to them, “Beware not to touch Allah’s she-camel badly, and do not attack it when watering it, so let it drink on its day while you are on your known day.

                فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ بِذَنْبِهِمْ فَسَوَّاهَا (14)     

That is, they denied the Messenger when he came to them and slaughtered the she-camel that Allah had sent as a sign for them and an argument against them, so Allah became angry with them and destroyed them and sent down punishment on them.

Qatada said: We were reported that the flesh of the oasis did not delay the camel until they were small and large, mentioned and mentioned and forgiven them.

A person suffers calamities from himself, and his fault, Allah doesn’t wrong people at all, but people do wrong themselves, for sins are a cause of destruction, and corruption. Therefore, Allah blinded them to destruction until none of them remained, and they became crippled in their homes.

                وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَاهَا (15)

Ibn Abbas said, “Allah doesn’t fear anyone’s responsibilities,” as Mujahid said and Al-Hasan, Bakr Bin Abdullah,  Al-Muzani, and others. Al-Dahhak and As-Suddi said: He does not fear its repercussions, that is, the one who defamed it did not fear the consequences of his actions.

This means that Allah is not afraid of the outcome of His torment for these people, nor is He afraid of those who follow them, for He is the owner of everything.

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

  1. By the Sun and his (glorious) splendor;
  2. By the Moon, as she follows him;
  3. By the Day as it shows up (the Suns) glory;
  4. By the Night as it conceals it;
  5. By the Firmament and its (wonderful) structure;
  6. By the Earth and its (wide) expanse:
  7. By the Soul and the proportion and order given to it;
  8. And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;-
  9. Truly he succeeds that purifies it,
  10. And he fails that corrupts it!
  11. The Thamud (people) rejected (their prophet) through their inordinate wrong-doing,
  12. Behold, the most wicked man among them was deputed (for impiety).
  13. But the Messenger of Allah said to them: “It is a She-camel of Allah! And (bar her not from) having her drink!”
  14. Then they rejected him (as a false prophet), and they hamstrung her. So their Lord, on account of their crime, obliterated their traces and made them equal (in destruction, high and low)!
  15. And for Him is no fear of its consequences.

Surah shams benefits

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) didn’t mention authentic hadiths for the virtues of Surah ash shams in particular.

But its virtue comes from the Muslim reading of it as one of the surahs of the Noble Quran, so

  • He takes the reward of reading and contemplating the Quran.
  • We find that reciting the Quran helps a person to stay away from sins.
  • Take a lesson from the meanings of the verses and draw closer to obeying and pleasing Allah.
  • It also opens your heart to faith, enlightens your insight, and keeps you away from sins.

But we find sham surah calls for some virtues, including:

  • The call to the purification of the soul, which came after 11 parts of Allah, and that the largest section in the Quran is an indication of the greatness of the event.
  • Warning against desecrating the soul and immersing it in sins and desires, and avoiding the pleasure of obeying Allah.
  • Warning against denying the call that the Messengers came to keep away from peril.
  • Allah was keen to strike many proverbs, such as striking the proverb with the succession of night and day, and the ability to continue life, the day is for work and hardship, and the night is for rest and stillness and the restoration of activity.
  • Surah shams, despite their shortness and few verses, were a great educational model for many of the values that we see in that surah, which confirms the miracle of the Holy Quran.
  • It also contains the law of human beings, and that he who purifies himself to piety has attained prosperity, and whoever purifies himself to immorality has been disappointed and lost everything in this world and the hereafter.
  • Emphasizing that Allah knows best about the human soul and what is inside it and what every human being hides, Allah swore by the soul of a human being that has puzzled many scholars and has become a great secret that only Allah knows.
  • wa shams surah also deals with many issues by demonstrating Allah’s ability to create the whole world, so that man realizes that the commands of Allah must be obeyed, as He is the Creator, capable of everything, and He knows what is in the souls and hearts of good and evil.

Hadith on surah al shams

As we mentioned, there are no authentic hadiths of the Prophet about the virtues of shams surah, but all of what is mentioned about the matter is nothing but weak and fabricated hadiths, meaning there is no chain of transmission and no basis for them.

Like the hadith that was narrated on the authority of Salman al-Farisi, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), said: “Whoever prays on the day of al-Fitr after he has prayed his Eid, four units of prayer, recites in the first rak’ah the Fatiha of the Book and sura Al-A’la, and in the second prayer of Allah: Surah shams, In the third Surah Ad-Duha, and the fourth Surah Al-Ikhlas

, and it is as if he had read every book that Allah had revealed to his prophets, and as if he had satiated all orphans, anointed them, and purified them, he will have a reward like that over which the sun rises, and his sins will be forgiven for fifty years.

And the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), said: “The one who is of little success should be addicted to reading it, Allah will grant him success wherever he goes, and it has many benefits, and is memorized and accepted by all people.

Al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: “It is desirable for one who has little provision and success, a lot of loss and heartbreak, to be addicted to reading it, and he will gain more and success in it, and whoever drinks its water will calm him down by the permission of Allah”.

On the authority of Abu Abdullah, peace be upon him, he said: “The sun” [the sun: 1], “and the night when it overflows” [the night: 1], and “the morning” [Duha: 1] and “Alam Nashrah: 1” ] On a day or a night, nothing will remain in His presence but will bear witness to Him on the Day of Resurrection, even his hair, his skin, his flesh and blood, his veins, his nerves, his bones, and all that the earth has carried with him, and the Lord, Blessed and Exalted be He, says:

I accepted your testimony for My servant and approved it for him, so they took him to my heavens so that he would choose from them wherever he liked, so they gave it to him without me, but it is a mercy from Me and a bounty on him, and congratulations to my servant”.

On the authority of Ubayy bin Kaab – may Allah be pleased with him – that he said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH), said: “Whoever recites it, it is as if he gave in charity everything on which the sun and the moon have risen.” This is a hadith that cannot be attributed to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH).

On the authority of Ali bin Abi Talib – may Allah be pleased with him – that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) – said: “O Ali, the one who recites (wa shamsi wa duhaha), it is as if he had recited Zabur, and for every verse, he recites there is a reward for him who prays between the corner and the standing place equivalent to thousand rak’ahs. So, this hadith is rejected, and it is not authentic.

Surah shams summary

We have provided everything related to Surah ashams beginning with the name of the surah because the word “sun” appears in the first verse of it, as Allah says: (والشمس وضحاها), to distinguish it from other surahs of the Holy Quran. Allah swore at the beginning of the sun that illuminates the horizons during the day.

Surah al Shams refers to many purposes like being alone with divinity and the greatness of Allah’s creation and swearing by that creation is evidence of his wonderful creation. It also focuses on encouraging obedience and warning against evil. Surah as shams came to clarify the fate of the infidels whom Allah mentioned at the end of Surah Al-Balad, so he mentioned in Surah shams the punishment of some of these infidels in this world, which is doom. Therefore, we must reflect on the verses of Allah well, meditate on his wonderful creation, learn from the stories of the forerunners, and take lessons from them, especially that the penalty is the same as the work.
