Why Was Surah Maun Revealed? Surah Maun ( Arabic: سورة الماعون ) also called Surah Al-Ma’un is one of the surahs of the Noble Quran which was revealed in Mecca, so it is considered a Meccan surah and its number between the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad(ﷺ) is the seventeenth surah.
The sheiks of Islam differed as to the reason for the revelation of Surah Maun.
Some of them, such as Al-Kalbi, Ali Ibn Ahmad Al-Wahidi, and Muqatil, said that it was revealed in Al-Aas bin Wael Al-Sahli,
But Ibn Juraij said that it was revealed in Sufyan Ibn Harb, as he was slaughtered weekly, and an orphan came to him asking for something from what he had slaughtered, But he refused, hit him with a stick, and sent him away without giving him anything, so surah maun was revealed.
What is the meaning of AL MA UN?
Most scholars said the meaning of al maun is Zakat that some people refuse to pay, and this is the most correct opinion.
Other scholars said that al maun is everything that can be necessary for a poor man and that life will not be continued without it and these necessities are (food, drink, clothing, housing and medicine) or all acts of kindness.
What does surah maun mean?
Surah al maun talks about a man who rejects the truth which the Prophet Muhammad(ﷺ) came with it, and not just that he deliberately lies against the truth.
He’s someone who knows the religion Islam is from Allah(ﷻ, but lies against it.
He also rejects the accountability of the day of Qiyamah.
In surah al maun also, Allah(ﷻ) is telling us that the one who lies against the day of Qiyamah, doesn’t have fears of his actions, so he continues to do one deed after another without remorse, including pushing the orphan away and refusing to give poor food.
Also, Allah(ﷻ) warns in Ma’un surah against delaying salah until the end of its time and against hypocrisy and ria’ and urges Muslims to be sincere in their work.

Where was surah maun revealed?
According to most scholars, surah Al-Ma’un was revealed in Mecca, and it was the 17th chapter revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) after Surah al-Takathur and before surah al-Kafirun. Ibn Abbas(رَضِيَ اللهُ عنهُ) noted that part of this surah was revealed in Mecca and the other part in Medina because the hypocrites didn’t exist in Mecca, and surah al maun mentioned some of the hypocrite’s deeds.
So, that is opinion seems more plausible and reflects the deep understanding of Ibn Abbas (رَضِيَ اللهُ عنهُ).
Is surah maun makki or madani?
Yes, surah al maun is Makki, according to the opinion of most scholars of Islam.
And only Ibn Abbas (رَضِيَ اللهُ عنهُ) said it was revealed with two parts, one of them in Makkah and the other part in Medina.
When was surah maun revealed?
Surah Al-Ma’un was revealed in Mecca, but the scholars of Islam differed as to the reason for the revelation of surah Maun, some of them said it was revealed about AL-As Ibn Wa’il al-Sahmi and the others said that it was sent about Abu Sufiyan before he became a Muslim as he used to repel the poor when they came to ask for help.
According to the opinion of Ibn Abbas(رَضِيَ اللهُ عنهُ) that this surah was sent to both Mecca and Medina, then it is probable that the first part of this surah talks about one of Quraysh leadership and the second half is talking about the hypocrites of Medina.

But if This movement doesn’t occur, this is evidence that faith didn’t exist in the heart,
Surah al maun was named by this name because Allah mentioned in it only the meaning of maun.
Surat maun directed the Muslims to several concepts:

Surah Al-Ma’un deals with two important parts, as it urges to take care of orphans and the performance of salah on time,
The prophet Muhammad(ﷺ) mentioned that in his hadiths,
Al-Bukhari narrated in his Sahih about Sahl bin Saad: that the Prophet Muhammad(ﷺ) said: “I and the one who looks after an orphan will be in Paradise like this, and he said with his index and middle fingers”.
The Prophet Muhammad(ﷺ) said: “The one who takes after the widow and the poor is like the one who strives in the way of Allah”.
Al-Bukhari and Muslims narrated in their Sahihs about Abdullah bin Masoud(رَضِيَ اللهُ عنهُ) said: I asked the Prophet Muhammad(ﷺ) which deed is most beloved to Allah? he said: salah on time”.
Surah maun Tafseer
Tafseer the Great Quran also is known as “Tafseer Ibn Kathir” one of the most famous Islamic books concerned with the science of tafseer of the Noble Quran, as it relies on the interpretation of the Quran with the Quran and the Sunnah.
Besides, he mentioned the jurisprudential rulings,
Also, it’s famous for devoiding Israelites.
So, we will mention the Tafseer of the verses of maun surah according to Tafseer Ibn Kathir.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, the most gracious, the most merciful.
أَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي يُكَذِّبُ بِالدِّينِ(1)
Allah(ﷻ) says, “Oh Muhammad! Have you seen the one who denies the Din?
And the word (Din) means the day of resurrection and the final reward.
فَذَٰلِكَ الَّذِي يَدُعُّ الْيَتِيمَ (2)
Allah(ﷻ) says,” That is he who repulses the orphan”
That means he is the one who oppresses the orphan, doesn’t give him his right, doesn’t feed him, or even treats him well.
وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ(3)
Allah(ﷻ) says, “And he doesn’t urge the feeding of Al-Miskin”
And the meaning of Miskin is the poor man who has nothing to sustain his needs.
فَوَيْلٌ لِّلْمُصَلِّينَ (4)
الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَن صَلَاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ (5)
Ibn Abbas and other sheikhs said in the Tafseer this verse, It means the hypocrites who pray in public but don’t pray in secret.
That is why Allah said: (for the prayers), those are the people who pray and have adhered to salah but they are mindless about doing it completely, as Ibn Abbas said, they don’t do it at the stipulated time and take it out of its time.
Ata’ bin Dinar mentioned that Allah said, (عَن صَلَاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ)
(with their Salah are mindless ) and Allah didn’t say, (in their salah are mindless), may it could also they always delay their salah until the end of its time, or they usually do, It may also refer to not fulfilling its pillars and conditions, and doing it in the required manner. It could also refer to people who perform it without humility or contemplation of its meanings.
الَّذِينَ هُمْ يُرَاءُونَ (6)
Allah(ﷻ) says, “The people who do good deeds only to be seen”, but it does the deed only for Allah(ﷻ), and the people know about it, this is not considered showing off (ria’).
Al-Tabarani said that Yahya Ibn Abdullah Ibn Abduwayh Al-Baghdadi told us, my father told us, Abdul Wahhab Ibn Ata’ told us, on the authority of Yunus, on the authority of Al-Hasan, on the authority of Ibn Abbas, on the authority of the Prophet Muhammad(ﷺ), he said: “In Hell, there is a valley that seeks refuge in Hell from that valley in every day four hundred times, that valley is prepared for the hypocrites of the nation of Muhammad(ﷺ) for the bearer of the Quran, for those who believe in something other than Allah(ﷻ), for the Haj to Ka’bba, and for those who go for jihad in the way of Allah(ﷻ)”.
Imam Ahmad said: Abu Naim told us, Al-Amash told us, on the authority of Amr bin Murra, he said: We were sitting with Abu Ubaidah and they mentioned that a man his name Abu Yazid said: I heard Abdullah bin Amr said: The prophet Muhammad(ﷺ) said: “The one who shows his good deeds to people, Allah(ﷻ) will make his creation hear about him, his humiliation and his smallness”.
وَيَمْنَعُونَ الْمَاعُونَ (7)
Allah(ﷻ) says:” Those people withhold Al-Ma’un”, which means they don’t worship their Lord well and don’t do good deeds to his creation, not even by lending what is used to benefit others,
Ibn Abi Najih said, on the authority of Mujahid: Ali(رَضِيَ اللهُ عنهُ) said: “Al-Ma`un is Zakat”.

Surah maun summary
Surah al maun is one of the shortest chapters which almost all Muslims memorize.
It was revealed to Quraysh, and its main theme is to inform their leadership about the doom that has been destined for them as a result of their crimes.
Also, surah al maun is providing examples of hypocrites and unbeliever personality traits that Allah(ﷻ) hates and Muslims should avoid.
We notice in this surah that the Quran equates the prohibition of giving and leaving prayer,
So, we are here in front of a clear Quranic directive that confirms the importance of the donor and confirms the danger of preventing it, as the Quran made prohibiting it like leaving prayer and wasting the rights of orphans and the needy.
This surah comes to treat one of the main problems, as it changes the prevailing perception of faith,
as the surah shows the effect of faith when it is established in the heart, because faith motivates a person to perform good deeds, and if a person doesn’t perform those deeds, it is evidence that faith does not exist within the heart.
In the end, we believe with no doubt that the Quran is Allah’s(ﷻ) words that were preserved until the day of Qyiamah from any distortion, and was revealed to Prophet Muhammad(ﷺ) to correct our behavior and make our lives as Muslims better.
