Surah Ikhlas (Arabic : سورة الاخلاص ) written Surah Al-Ikhlas describes the concept of Allah in Islam. Whoever understands this Surah properly and believes firmly in its teachings, will get rid of “Shirk” (polytheism) completely.

The religion of Islam presented in the Qur’an is based on the following three doctrines:

1) Tawheed (belief in the Oneness of Allah)

2) Risalat (belief in the Prophets & Messengers of Allah and the teachings that they brought for humanity through Divine revelations)

3) Akhirat (belief in the next life after death and in the rewards or punishments in that life based on the deeds performed in this life)

Surah Al-Ikhlas summarizes the doctrine of Tawheed (Oneness of Allah), so it is considered one-third of the Qur’an. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“By He (Allah) in Whose Hand is my soul, verily it (Surah Al-Ikhlas) is equivalent to a third of the Qur’an.”          [Narrated by Al-Bukhari, Abu Dawood, An-Nasa’i]

What is the main theme of surah al ikhlas?

To all those who worship anything or anybody other than Allah, Surah al ikhlas is an indictment against them.

This includes those who worship idols, Jesus or ‘Uzayr or the sun or moon or any other deity.

That Allah is the only one who deserves to be worshiped, the only one who has no colleagues, the only one who has no peer, the Almighty who has no assistants, the Unrivaled who has no rival, and the One Peerless who has no equal.

Surah Al Ikhlas (سورة الاخلاص ) also known as The Sincerity, The Purity, and Surah Tawheed (التوحيد ), is one of the most significant chapters in the Quran.

The 112th chapter of the Quran, known as Surah Ikhlas ayat, consists of four verses that stress Allah’s unity and oneness.

Some scholars think this Surah was revealed during the battle between Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the Quraysh when they contested the unique characteristics of the deity worshipped by Muhammad (PBUH).

However, it is not just the name of this Surah but also the title of its contents that emphasize Tawheed (the undeniable notion of monotheism and the oneness of Allah).

Where was surah al ikhlas revealed?

Surah Al-Ikhlas consists of four verses ( qul huwallahu ahad surah ) were revealed in Makkah. If you recite this Surah, you get the same reward as reciting a third of the Quran.

When was surah ikhlas revealed?

Surah al ikhlas was revealed during the early days of Islam when the polytheists of Mecca approached and challenged him saying “ Give us the genealogy of your Rabb “.

So Allah revealed surah ikhlas.

Is surah ikhlas makki or madani ?

Al-ikhlas is Makki in response to the Quraysh who came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his household) and asked him to describe his Rabb.

Surah Ikhlas story

The Quraysh (قریش) came to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his household) in Makka challenging and asked him to describe his Rabb so that they might know and worship him.

Muhammad (peace be upon him and his household) reportedly asked them to worship.

Surah al ikhlas was revealed in response to the polytheists narrated from Abu al-Aliyah on the authority of Ubay ibn Ka’b, and Sha’bi under the authority of Jabir.

The polytheists said to the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, (peace be upon him and his household)  “Tell us the lineage of your Rabb.”

In response, Allaah The Almighty revealed (what means): {Say, “He Is Allaah, [Who Is] One, Allaah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither Begets nor Is Born. Nor is there to Him any equivalent.}[Ahmad and At-Tirmithi].

According to Ikrima, the polytheists said to the Prophet “Tell us about the attributes of your Rabb, He who sent you as a Prophet” as a result, Allah revealed the surah “Say: ‘He is Allah, the Unique One of Absolute Oneness.’”

Those who say it was in response to a question from the Jews narrated this report: A group of Jews came to the Prophet and said, “O Muhammad! Allah created mankind, but who created Allah?” Upon hearing this, the Prophet became extremely angry and rebuked them for asking such a question.

Then Jibril came and said: “O Muhammad! Your Rabb has sent an answer to their question. Convey to them “Say: ‘He is Allah, the Unique One of Absolute Oneness.’”

In a report by Qatadah, a group of Jews came to the Prophet and said “Inform us of the ancestry of your Rabb.” Upon which the surah “Say: ‘He is Allah, the Unique One of Absolute Oneness’” was revealed.

According to a narration by Imam ar-Razi, this surah was revealed following the questions put forth by the Christians.

Ata narrated from Ibn Ab- bas: A Christian delegation that came from Najran asked us to describe our Rabb “What is He made from, what substance is He made from?” The Messenger of Allah replied “My Rabb is not created from anything, He is the Creator of all things.”

Then the surah “Say: ‘He is Allah, the Unique One of Absolute Oneness’” was revealed.

How to read surah ikhlas?

After knowing a story of al ikhlas surah, let’s learn how to read it :

Ikhlas surah in english

  1. Say: “He is Allah” 2.” One”. 3. “He begets not, nor was He begotten”. 4. “And there is noncomparable to Him.”

We can learn how to read Al-Ikhlas in several ways:

The first obstacle faced the beginners attempting to learn the Qur’an is the language so it’s better to learn Arabic from the basics.

So you can seek guidance from Quranic teachers at mosques, Islamic centers or even online at home.

  • By yourself  at home:

To learn the Quran for beginners listen to it while reciting from the Mushaf. Listening will improve your recitation and overall learning capabilities to a great extent.

– Some websites provide the option of selecting the number of times you need to replay so specify an amount of Ayat according to your capability, listen to them as a whole, then listen to one Ayah or even part of it, then pause and repeat after the Sheikh with your eyes in the Mushaf in all the process.

Practice makes perfect! If you wish to improve your recitation, then we highly recommend reading at least one page a day. In the beginning, this might take you a little over 10 minutes, but once you get good at it, you will be able to recite the Quran much better in less time, Inshallah.

  • At Mosque from imam

-Allah SWT sent Angel Jibreel with the revelation to Prophet Muhammad PBUH. Thus, it is highly recommended when learning the book of Allah to listen to it directly from another expert person, then to read before him/her to let them correct your mistakes.

Allah the Almighty states in Quran: “So when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its recitation,” [Al-Qiyamah: 18].

Learning Quran by yourself doesn’t ensure fluency as there is no one who will help you to correct your mistakes and improve your recitation

Yes, listening to audio helps a lot in practicing and enhancing your ability, but there is no guarantee for grasping every point of articulation and other Tajweed rules in a correct manner.

Also, there is a possibility of making a major mistake like changing one vowel and similar stuff and memorizing it that way. Thus, it will be too hard for you to correct it later unless you duplicate your effort.

surah al ikhlas tafsir

قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ

(Say: “He is Allah, One.”) meaning, He is the One, the Singular, Who has no peer, no assistant, no rival, no equal, and none comparable to Him. This word (Al-Ahad) cannot be used for anyone in affirmation except Allah the Mighty and Majestic, because He is perfect in all of His attributes and actions. Concerning His saying,

اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ

(Allah As-Samad.) `Ikrimah reported that Ibn `Abbas said, “This means the One Who all of the creation depends upon for their needs and their requests.” `Ali bin Abi Talhah reported from Ibn `Abbas, “He is the Master Who is perfect in His sovereignty, the Most Noble Who is perfect in His nobility, the Most Magnificent Who is perfect in His magnificence, the Most Forbearing Who is perfect in His forbearance, the All-Knowing Who is perfect in His knowledge, and the Wisest Who is perfect in His wisdom.

He is the One Who is perfect in all aspects of nobility and authority. He is Allah, glory be unto Him. These attributes are not befitting anyone other than Him. He has no coequal and nothing is like Him. Glory be to Allah, the One, the Irresistible.” Al-A`mash reported from Shaqiq, who said that Abu Wa’il said,

الصَّمَدُ

(As-Samad.) is the Master Whose control is complete.”

Allah is Above having Children and procreating

Then Allah says,

الصَّمَدُ(As-Samad) is One Who does not give birth, nor was He born, because there is nothing that is born except that it will die, and there is nothing that dies except that it leaves behind inheritance, and indeed Allah does not die and He does not leave behind any inheritance.

لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ – وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَّهُ كُفُواً أَحَدٌ

(He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.) meaning, He does not have any child, parent, or spouse. Mujahid said,

وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَّهُ كُفُواً أَحَدٌ

(And there is none comparable to Him.) “This means He does not have a spouse.” This is as Allah says,

وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَّهُ كُفُواً أَحَدٌ

(And there is none comparable to Him.) This means that there is none similar to Him, none equal to Him and there is nothing at all like Him.

” Ibn Abi Hatim also recorded it and At-Tirmidhi mentioned it as a Mursal narration. Then At-Tirmidhi said, “And this is the most correct.”

(He is the Originator of the heavens and the earth. How can He have children when He has no wife He created all things.) (6:101) meaning, He owns everything and He created everything.

So how can He have a peer among His creatures who can be equal to Him, or a relative who can resemble Him Glorified, Exalted and far removed is Allah from such a thing. Allah says,

(And they say: Ar-Rahman has begotten a son. Indeed you have brought forth (said) a terrible evil thing. Whereby the heavens are almost torn, and the earth is split asunder, and the mountains fall in ruins, that they ascribe a son to Ar-Rahman. But it is not suitable for Ar-Rahman that He should beget a son. There is none in the heavens and the earth but comes unto Ar-Rahman as a slave. Verily, He knows each one of them and has counted them a full counting. And all of them will come to Him alone on the Day of Resurrection.) (19:88-95) And Allah says,

(And they say: “Ar-Rahman has begotten a son. Glory to Him! They are but honored servants. They speak not until He has spoken, and they act on His command.) (21:26-27) Allah also says,

surah ikhlas mishary

Surah Al-Ikhlas whole Narrated by Hafs from Asim in the voice of reciter Sheikh Mishary Rashid Al-Afasy For Online listening and MP3 download

Why is surah ikhlas one-third of the Quran?

Al ikhlas surah is equal to one-third of the Quran because the Quran deals with three topics: one-third for rulings, one-third for promises and warnings, and one-third for divine names and attributes.

Suruh al ikhlas combines names and attributes, so it’s equal to one-third of the Quran in reward when reciting it but does not take the place of reading one-third of the Quran.

In spite of suruh al ikhlas being equal to one-third, Muslims can not do without the two other issues, which are the rulings and the promise and warnings.

Muslims can not be complete unless looking at the book of Allah as a whole.

So according to the following two hadiths, Surah ikhlas is equal to a third of the Qur’an.

According to Abu Said Al-Khudri: “A man heard another person reciting (in the prayers): “Say (O Muhammad): “He (Allah) is (the) One.” (Quran 112:1).

So, the next day, he went back to the Prophet and told him about it, as though reciting the verse was not sufficient.

“By Him Whose Hand my life is in, al ikhlas surah is equal to one-third of the Qur’an,” said Allah’s Prophet. (Al-Prophetic Bukhari’s Tradition)

The Prophet stated to his companions, “Is it difficult for any of you to recite one-third of the Qur’an in one night?” in another hadith by Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri.

To which they said, ‘Who among us has the capacity to do so, O Allah’s Prophet?

A third of the Qur’an, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), responded. In accordance with (Sahih Al-Bukhari),

Lady ‘A’ishah narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to cup his hands together and blow into them after reciting surat al ikhlas, Surat Al-Falaq, and Surat An-Nas, and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he could reach, starting with his head, face, and the front of his body. This is what he used to do three times.” Al-(Sahih Bukhari’s Al-Bukhari)

Why was surah ikhlas revealed?

It is in Surah al-Ikhlas that we find Allah’s true nature as revealed in the Quran.

This Surah’s goal is to clear up any misunderstandings people may have regarding Allah.

Tawheed replaces those misunderstandings with its basic reality.

In the event that someone reads this Surah and understands its meaning thoroughly, they are protected from shirk. Polytheism, or shirk, is the sole sin that cannot be forgiven in Islam.

What is the importance of surah ikhlas?

Al Ikhlas is regarded as one of Islam’s most important verses. Surah Al Ikhlas is revered by Muslims across the world and is equivalent to one-third of the whole Quran.

For this reason: The oneness of Allah is the first of three fundamental concepts upon which all the Quranic teachings are predicated.

Allah’s oneness is affirmed, and all types of idolatry and polytheism are ruled out by the surah al ikhlas.

Surah Al Ikhlas, the cornerstone of Islam, is based on total trust in Allah’s oneness and thus strengthens its significance. Allah, according to Islam, is the only Allah. It’s just him and a few aides.

– Ikhlas surah’s importance appears from Muawiyah Al-Mazni (RA) when he died as Archangel Gabriel descended and asked Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) if he wanted him to bend the earth so that Prophet Muhammad may pray over his body.

After receiving confirmation from the Beloved Prophet, Archangel Gabriel struck the ground with his wing and raised the land for him. Two rows of Angels encompassing 70,000 angels each came down to accompany the prayer.

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) asked, “With what has he [Muawiyah Al-Mazni] achieved for this honor?” To which Archangel Gabriel responded, “By his love of Surah Ikhlas, that he recited by going, coming, sitting, standing and all in circumstances.”

Why the surah was named Al-Ikhlas?

– Sheikh Ibn Al – Othimin has stated in the tafsir of surah al ikhlas that it is called the Surah of ikhlas because it guarantees sincerity to Allah and whoever believes in it is sincere.

If a man recites it, believing in it, he is loyal to Allah.

Or because Allah dedicated it to himself, as Allah didn’t mention any of the judgments, nor any of the news about others, it’s only about Allah.

The two faces are perfect, and there is no contradiction between them.

This surah was called “Al-Ikhlas” (The Purity) because it conveys the unification of Allah, the basis of the Islamic faith in the purest, most excellent manner. Allah the Almighty was never described so beautifully in any other scripts as He was in the Qur’anic scripts Ayat al-Kursi and Surah al-Ikhlas, or in any religion other than Islam. This surah rejects all kinds of polytheism in an extremely concise manner.

Surah ikhlas benefits

Therefore, from the previous hadith we can conclude the great benefits of ikhlas surah

1. Parable of reciting one-third of the Quran

Abu Sa’id Al-Khudriy r.a. narrated:

“A man heard another man reciting (Surah Al-Ikhlas) and he was repeating it (in his prayer). The next morning he came to Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. and mentioned the whole story to him as if he regarded the recitation of that Surah as insufficient.

Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. then replied, “By Him in Whose Hand my soul is! That (Surah Al-Ikhlas) equals one-third of the Quran.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari)

Protection from Evil and Black Magics

Every night before going to sleep, the Prophet (PBUH) would cup his hands together, recite the al ikhlas surah, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas, and blow over it, following which he would massage his hands over as much of his body as he could. Similarly, the Prophet (PBUH) instructed us to recite these three surahs every night in Musnad Ahmad (as well).

“Whenever the Prophet s.a.w. went to bed every night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over them after reciting (Surah Al-Ikhlas), (Surah Al-Falaq), and (Surah An-Nas), and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head, face, and front of his body.

He used to do that three times.”

(Muttafaqun ‘Alayh)

  1. Following and practising the Prophet’s Sunnah

On many occasions that our Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. was heard reciting Surah Al-Kafirun (in the first Rak’ah), and Surah Al-Ikhlas (in the second Rak`ah) in the two sunnah Rak’ah of the Subuh prayer in the two rakaat after Maghrib prayer

“I can’t count the number of times Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. read in the two rakaat (Sunnah) of Maghrib and in the two rakaat (Sunnah) of Subuh – (Surah Al-Kafirun and Surah Al-Ikhlas)”

(Sunan At-Tirmizi)

and in the Witr prayer, as narrated by Abdullah Ibn ‘Abbas r.a:

“Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. would perform the Witr prayer in three (rakaat). He would read on the first rakaat (Surah Al-A’la), and on the second rakaat (Surah Al-Kafirun), and on the third rakaat (Surah Al-Ikhlas)”

(Sunan At-Tirmizi)

  1. Love for Surah Al-Ikhlas will entail one to enter the Paradise

A companion from the Ansar r.a. once consistently recited surah Al-Ikhlas every time he led the congregational prayers. This became a point of inquiry from other companions. This was raised to the Prophet s.a.w. to which the Prophet s.a.w. asked him:

The Prophet s.a.w. asked, “What motivates you to consistently recite this Surah (Al-Ikhlas) in all the Rakaat”. He replied “Verily I love it (Surah Al-Ikhlas). He (the Prophet) then replied “Your love for it shall admit you into Paradise”

(Sunan At-Tirmizi)

  • Earning the Love of Allah

Allah adores one who recites surah al ikhlas.

A guy who enjoyed reciting the surah e ikhlas in Salah, according to Sahih Al-Bukhari, was praised by the Prophet (PBUH).

The Prophet s.a.w. sent (an army unit) under the command of a man who used to lead his companions in the prayers and would finish his recitation with (Surah Al-Ikhlas).

When they returned (from the battle), they mentioned it to the Prophet s.a.w. He replied (to them), “Ask him why he does so.” They asked him and he said, “I do so because it mentions the qualities of The Most Merciful (Ar-Rahman) and I love to recite it (in my prayer).”

The Prophet s.a.w. said (to them), “Tell him that Allah loves him.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari)

  • In Paradise, Allah will build a palace.

As the Prophet (PBUH) stated in Musnad Ahmad, those who complete the entire surah ikhlas 10 times would get a palace in Heaven from Allah. Furthermore, in Sahih Al-Bukhari, the Prophet (PBUH) said that a man’s affection for Surah Ikhlaas would lead him to Jannah.

  • Allah’s greatest name

Surah Al-Ikhlas is said to contain Allah’s most excellent name, according to a Hadith in Sunan Abi Dawud. Therefore, a request made using it will result in an answer, and a request made in response to it will also result in an answer.

Indeed, all the Surahs in the Quran have distinct significance and are full of wisdom and merits. One of which is the vast virtues of Surah Al-Ikhlas.

With this understanding, we pray together that Allah instills in our love towards Surah Al-Ikhlas in hopes that it will assist us in maintaining the sincerity of our intention in all our affairs. We also pray that may Allah s.w.t. grant us the love and pleasure of Allah s.w.t. by our sincere intentions.

Surah ikhlas for kids

Our kids, regardless of whether they were born Muslims, newly converted Muslims, or ex-Muslims who reverted to Islam should be taught this Surah.

Surat Al-Ikhlas is considered one of the best surahs that young children can memorize because its words are easy and simple, and its verses are only four.

We always are making kids memorize nursery rhymes and songs, but this is so much better. I believe even a little kid, like a toddler, could memorize Surah Ikhlas and learn the meaning of it very easily.

This would be better for them than all the Dunya knowledge put together.

It is one of the easiest short surahs, and it protects them from all evil, teaches them a lot about the origins of the Islamic religion, and makes them realize from an early age the attributes of Allah and the importance of monotheism and not polytheism. It is also read to protect children from evil and envy.

Surah Al Ikhlas Summary

It’s important to remember that learning Allah’s Divine Attributes is not the same as remembering them.

Instead, we should use these Attributes to our advantage; we should strive to replicate and practice them as much as we can.

This is the only way we can truly benefit from them.

No one has greater patience than Allah when it comes to hearing something disagreeable, according to the Prophet. They think of Him as having a son, but in reality, it is He Who provides for their needs and heals them.” (Al-Bukhari)

Would you be patient and kind to him if he hurt you because of this hadith?

What if you could learn from Allah’s Divine Patience and become a better person because of it?
