What is the main theme of Surah ankabut? Surah ankabut (Arabic : سورة العنكبوت) The top contents of  Al-Ankabut are centralized around the theme of ultimate belief; Its great origins are monotheism, the message, the reward, and the resurrection. The focus of the ankabut revolves around faith and affliction in this life; Because the Muslims, while they were in Mecca, had endured all kinds of ordeals and hardships, this surah ankabut came to talk about some sensitive issues such as temptation and trial; These topics were mentioned explicit, especially when telling some stories of the prophets.

Surah Al-ankabut meaning

surah al ankabut was named after this name; Because God mentioned the spider on it,  as an example of the sinful idol sculptures, and the claimed gods in its fragility. “The parable of those who take protectors other than Allah is that of a spider spinning a shelter. And the flimsiest of all shelters is certainly that of a spider, if only they knew”.

The precise example of the spider in surah ankaboot was to illustrate the similarities between the spider’s state and alleged gods. externally, the web is too weak to protect the spider against rain and strong wind. Internally, the spider’s family structure is fragile, since some species are cannibalistic towards their species, with the female preying on the male and the young eating their mother.

Why was the surah named Al-ankbut?

Have you ever wondered why surah ankabut is named after that? in our holy Quran Allah wants people to think and take a deep look at all the small creatures around them to show how Allah reveals greatness even in the creation of the smallest creatures, In many surahs, Allah set for us many examples like Solomon Ant and the talking hoopoe. Ankboot is not only setting examples for the graces of Allah, but it is also an inspiration for everyone who has doubts in his faith or has those moments of weakness, Allah wants to tell us to stick to our faith in him and not to lose our faith no matter what happens, and that was the story of believers through all ages, getting tested to get stronger.

Ankaboot also was related to a famous miracle that happened in The Cave of Hira when the disbelievers were stalking the prophet Muhamed after he succeeded in escaping from them by the grace of God, Allah sent a spider to spin its web at the entrance of the cave to mislead them in fields and distract them from entering it, and it was narrated by ibn Kathir in his book.

Where was Surah Al-Ankbut revealed?

It was said by some of the commentators that the ankabut surah is one of the surahs that the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad said in the place of its revelation. It was between Mecca and Medina, and some commentators have argued that it is Meccan, as there are no reliable narrations regarding the fact that some of its verses are Medinan, which confirms that it is Meccan.

Why was surah ankabut revealed?

The reason for the revelation of the second verse, is: “Do people think once they say, “We believe,” that they will be left without being put to the test?”

Al-Sha’bi said: “It was reflected about people in Mecca who had declared their Islam, so the companions of the Messenger of God wrote to them Mohamed peace be upon him.  If they don’t move towards the Medina that neither approval nor Islam will be approved by you. Until they emigrated,  then they gradually set out to Medina, meanwhile, the polytheists followed them, and hurt them, forcing them to return. So this verse was revealed, so they wrote to them that such-and-such has been revealed about you, and they said: We will go out, and if someone follows us, we will fight him.

When was Surah Al-Ankbut revealed?

About the revelation of this surah, it was revealed after Surah al-Rum, and before Surat al-Mutaffifin in the year coming before the year of migration.

Is surah ankabut Makki or Madani?

surat ankabout is one of the Meccan surahs that were revealed to the heart of the Messenger of God – may God’s prayers and peace be upon him – in Mecca, except verses 1 to 11, as it is a Medinan surah that was revealed to the Prophet – may God’s prayers and peace be upon him – in Medina.

surah al ankabut benefits

The spiritual benefits of surat ankabout  in the life of a Muslim can be summed up in the following points:

  • Surah al ankabut focuses on present life as the residence of testing, affliction, and trials in which there is no rest for a believer, while the hereafter is the abode of stability, reward, and permanence.
  • The believer must do everything he can to obey Allah Almighty and carry out His commands. And to know that there is no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator, even if they are his parents.
  •  The Muslim person must also be patient with tribulation and calamities, no matter how severe or prolonged. And not to permit Satan to reach by objecting to God’s judgment and by being anxious and despairing of God’s mercy.
  •  A Muslim must know that God brings calamity and tribulations to scrutinize the believers and to differentiate the true believer from the untrue, and He knows them better.
  • A Muslim must know that calamities and afflictions are not limited to a Muslim or a non-Muslim only, but rather afflict both, and this is one of the greatest spiritual benefits of  Al-Ankabut.  Showing that Common sense and a sound mind will lead man to worship God.
  • The path of belief in God will be fraught with hardships and temptations, and the Muslim must also adhere to God’s commands and avoid his prohibitions, so the Muslim must be patient in taking this path. And acts of obedience such as fasting, prayer, and pilgrimage are the provision of the Muslim on his way to reach Allah. Honoring one’s parents, and obeying them, are among the greatest deeds which a Muslim does to get close to Allah.

  1. Allah created the heavens and the earth with his truth. Verily, therein is surely a sign for those who believe. 45. Recite what has been revealed to you in the Book, and perform the prayer. Verily, the prayers prevent from Al-Fahsha’ (immoral sins) and Al-Munkar (evil deeds), and the remembering (praising) of Allah is greater indeed. And Allah knows what you do.)

Verse 46

  1. And don’t argue with the People of the Scripture, except in good manners ways-  and don’t argue with such of them as doing wrong; and say (to them): “We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you; our God and your God is One, and to Him, we have submitted.’

Verses 47 to 49

  1. And thus We have sent down the Book to you, and those whom We gave the Scripture believe therein as also do some of these, and none but the disbelievers reject Our Ayat. 48. Neither did you read any book before it nor did you write any book with your right hand? In that case, indeed, the followers of falsehood might have doubted. 49. Nay, but it is clear Ayat, (preserved) in the hearts of those who have been given knowledge. And none but the sinners deny Our Ayat

Verses 50 to 52

  1. And they say: “Why are not signs sent down to him from his Lord” Say: “The signs are only with Allah, and I am only a modest warner.” 51. Is it not sufficient for them that We have sent down to you the Book which is recited to them Verily, herein is mercy and a reminder for a people who believe. 52. Say: “Sufficient is Allah for a witness between me and you. He knows what is in the heavens and on the earth.” And those who believe in falsehood, and disbelieve in Allah, it is they who are the losers.

Verses 53 to 55

  1. And they ask you to hurry on the torment, and had it not been for a term appointed, the torment would certainly have come to them. And surely, it will come upon them suddenly while they perceive not! 54. They ask you to hasten on the torment. And verily, Hell, of a surety, will encompass the disbelievers. 55. On the Day when the torment shall cover them from above them and from beneath their feet, it will be said: “Taste what you used to do.”

  1. O My servants who believe! Certainly, immense is My earth. Therefore worship Me. 57. Everyone shall taste death. Then unto Us, you shall be returned. 58. And those who believe and do righteous good deeds, to them We shall surely give majestic dwellings in Paradise, beneath which rivers flow, to live therein forever. Excellent is the reward for the workers. 59. Those who are patient, and put their trust in their Lord. 60. And so many moving creatures do not have provisions! Allah provides for it and for you. And He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower

Verses 61 to 63

  1. And if you were to ask them: “Who has created the heavens and the earth and subjected the sun and the moon” They will surely reply: “Allah.” How then are they deviating from .62? Allah expands the provision for whom He wills of His servants, and straightens it for whom (He wills). Verily, Allah is the All-Knower of everything. 63. And if you were to ask them: “Who sends down water from the sky, and gives life therewith to the earth after its death” They will surely reply: “Allah.” Say: “All the praises and thanks be to Allah!” Nay, most of them have no sense.

verses 64 to 66

  1. And this life of the world is only an amusement and a play! Verily, the home of the Hereafter -that is life indeed if they but knew. 65. And when they embark on a ship, they invoke Allah, making their faith pure for Him only, but when He brings them safely to land, behold, they give a share of their worship to others. 66. So that they become ingrate for that which We have given them, and that they take their enjoyment, but they will come to know.

Verses 66 to 69

  1. Have they not seen that We have made a protected sanctuary, while men are being snatched away from all around them Then do they believe in falsehood, and deny the graces of Allah 68. And who does more wrong than he who invents a lie against Allah or denies the truth, when it comes to him? Is there not a residence in Hell for the disbelievers 69. As for those who strive hard for Us, We will surely guide them to Our paths. And verily, Allah is with the doers of good.

surah ankabut in English

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
1. Alif. Lam. Mim.
2. Bethink men that they shall be left alone because they say: we believe; and that they shall not be tempted?
3. And assuredly We have tempted those who were before them. So Allah will surely know those who are true and He will surely know the liars.
4. Or bethink those who work ill deeds that they shall outstrip Us? ll do they judge!
5. Whosoever hopeth for the meeting with Allah, then Allah´s Term is surely coming, and He is the Hearer, the Knower.
6. And whosoever strive, striveth only for himself: verily Allah is Independent of the worlds.
7. And whosoever believe and work righteous works, We shall purge away from them their ill-deeds and shall recompense them the best of that which they have been working.
8. And We have enjoined on man kindness unto parents. But if the twain strive to make thee associate with Me that of which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not. Unto Me is your return, and I shall declare unto you that which ye have been working.
9. And those who believe and work righteous works–We shall surely cause them to enter among the righteous.
10. Of mankind are some who say: we believe in Allah; then if they are afflicted in the way of Allah, they take the persecution of men even as the torment of Allah; and then, if succour cometh from thy Lord they say: verily we have been with you. Is not Allah the Best Knower of that which is in the breasts of the creatures?
11. And surely Allah shall come to know those who believe, and surely He shall come to know the hypocrites.
12. And those who disbelieve say unto those who believe: Follow our way, and we shall surely bear your sins; whereas they shall not bear aught of their sins; verily they are the liars.
13. And surely they shall bear their loads and other loads beside their own loads, and surely they shall be questioned on the Day of Resurrection concerning that which they were wont to fabricate.
14. And assuredly We sent Nuh unto his people. Then he tarried among them for a thousand years, save fifty years; and then deluge overtook them, while they were wrong-doers.
15. Then We delivered him and those in the ark, and made it a sign unto the worlds.
16. And We sent Ibrahim. Recall what time he said unto his people: worship Allah, and fear Him; that is best for you if ye but knew.
17. Ye only worship images instead of Allah, and ye create a falsehood. Verily those whom ye worship instead of Allah own no provision for you. Wherefore seek with Allah provision, and worship Him, and give thanks unto Him: unto Him, ye shall be returned.
18. And if ye belie me, then communities, before you have belied: and upon the apostle, is naught but a preaching manifest.
19. Observe they not what wise Allah originateth creation? And then He shall restore it. Verily for Allah that is easy.
20. Say thou: go about in the land and behold what wise He hath originated creation, and then Allah shall produce another production; verily Allah is over everything Potent.
21. He shall torment whomsoever He Will, and shall show mercy unto whomsoever He Will, and unto Him, ye shall be returned.
22. And ye cannot escape in the earth nor in the heaven, and beside Allah, there is for you no friend nor helper.
23. Those who disbelieve in the signs of Allah and in their meeting with Him, they shall despair of My mercy, and they! theirs shall be a torment afflictive.
24. Then the answer of his people was naught but that they said: slay him, or burn him. Then Allah delivered him from the fire; verily therein are signs for a people who believe.
25. And he said: ye have taken images instead of Allah out of affection between you in the life of the world; but on the Day of Resurrection ye shall deny each other and ye shall curse each other, and your resort shall be the Fire, and ye shall have no helpers.
26. And Lut believed in him. And he said: verily I am going to migrate to my Lord; verily He is the Mighty, the Wise.
27. And We bestowed on him Is-haq and Y´aqub, and We placed among his posterity prophethood and the Book, and We vouchsafed unto him his hire in the World, and verily in the Hereafter, he shall be of the righteous.
28. And Lut: Recall what time he said unto his people: verily ye commit an indecency wherein none hath preceded you in the Worlds.
29. Ye go in indeed unto males, and ye rob on the highway, and ye commit that which is disreputable in your assembly? Then the answer of his people was naught but that they said: bring thou God´s torment on us if thou art of the truth-tellers.
30. He said: my Lord! give me victory over the corrupt people.
31. And when Our messengers came unto Ibrahim with the glad tidings, they said: verily we are about to destroy the inhabitants of that city: verily the inhabitants thereof have been wrong-doers.
32. He said: verily Lut is therein. They said: we know better who is therein: we are to deliver him and his household, save his wife; she is to be of the lingerers.
33. And when Our messengers came unto Lut, he was distressed on their account and felt straitened on their account. And they said: fear not, nor grieve: verily we are to deliver thee and thy household, save thy wife: she is to be of the lingerers.
34. Verily we are about to bring down upon the inhabitants of this city a scourge from the heaven, for they have been transgressing.
35. And assuredly We have left a thereof a manifest sign for a people who reflect.
36. And unto Madyan We sent their brother, Shu´aib. He said: my people! worship Allah, and fear the Last Day, and commit not evil on the earth as corrupters.
37. Then they belied him; wherefore an earthquake laid hold of them, and they lay in their dwellings, crouching.
38. And the ´Aad and Thamud and of a surety their destruction is apparent unto you from their dwellings. The Satan made fair-seeming their works unto them, and so kept them off from the path, while they were endued with sight.
39. And Qarun and Fir´awn and Haman! And assuredly Musa came unto them with the evidence, yet they were stiff-necked in the land. And they could not outstrip Us.
40. Wherefore each We laid hold of for his sin. Of them were some on whom We sent a violent wind; and of them were some – who were overtaken by a shout; and of them were some – with whom We sank the earth, and of them were some – whom We drowned. Allah was not such as to wrong them, but themselves they were wont to wrong.
41. The likeness of those who take other patrons than Allah is as the likeness of the spider who taketh unto herself a house. And verily the frailest of all houses is the spider´s house – if they but knew!
42. Verily Allah knoweth whatsoever thing they invoke beside Him. And He is the Mighty, the Wise.
43. And these similitudes! We propound them for mankind, and none understand them to save men of knowledge.
44. Allah hath created the heavens and the earth in truth; verily therein is a sign for the believers.
45. Recite thou that which hath been revealed unto thee of the Book and establish thou the prayer; verily prayer preventeth man from indecency and that which is disreputable: and surely the remembrance of Allah is the greatest. And Allah knoweth that which ye perform.
46. And dispute not with the people of the Book unless in the best manner, save with those of them who do wrong; and say: we believe in that which hath been sent down unto us and that which hath been sent down unto you: our God and your God is One, and unto Him we are submissive.
47. And likewise have We sent down unto thee the Book; so those to whom We have vouchsafed the Book believe therein, and of those also some believe therein. And none gainsay Our signs save the infidels.
48. And thou hast not been reciting any book before it, nor hast thou been writing it With thine right hand, for then might the followers of falsehood have doubted.
49. Aye! it in itself manifest signs in the breasts of those who have been vouchsafed knowledge, and none gainsay Our signs save the wrong-doers.
50. And they say: wherefore are not signs sent down upon him from his Lord! Say thou: signs are with Allah only, and I am but a manifest warner.
51. Sufficeth it not for them that We have sent down unto thee the Book to be recited unto them? Verily herein is mercy and an admonition for a people who believe.
52. Say thou: Allah sufficeth for witness between me and you: He knoweth whatsoever is in the heavens and the earth. And they who believe in falsehood and disbelieve in Allah, those: they shall be the losers.
53. And they ask thee to hasten on the torment. And had not there been a term appointed, the torment would surely have come unto them. And surely it shall come upon them of a sudden while they perceive not.
54. They ask thee to hasten on the torment, and verily the Hell is about to encompass the infidels.
55. On the Day whereon the torment shall cover them from above them and from underneath their feet, and He shall say: a taste that which ye have been working!
56. My bondmen, who believe! verily My earth is wide, so Me alone worship.
57. Every soul shall taste of death; then unto Us, ye shall be returned.
58. And those who believe and work righteous works–them We shall surely settle in lofty dwellings of the; they shall be of the Garden whereunder the rivers flow; they shall be abiders therein. Excellent is the hire of the Workers.
59. Who persevere and in their Lord trust!
60. And how many a moving creature there is that beareth not its provision! Allah provideth for it and for you. And He is the Hearer, the Knower.
61. And Wert thou to ask them.: who hath created the heavens and the earth and subjected the sun and the moon they would surely say: Allah. How then are they deviating?
62. Allah expandeth provision for whomsoever He Will of His bondmen and stinteth it for him. Verily Allah is of everything the Knower.
63. And Wert thou to ask them: who sendeth down water from the heaven, and therewith quickeneth the earth after the death thereof? they would surely say, Allah. Say thou: all praise unto Allah! Aye! most of them reflect not.
64. And this life of the world is but: sport and play. Verily the home of the Hereafter–that is life indeed if they but knew!
65. So When they mount upon the ships they call on Allah making pure for Him the religion, then when He delivereth them safely on the land, lo! they associate
66. So that they become ingrate for that which We have vouchsafed unto them, and that they enjoy themselves, but presently they shall know.
67. Behold they not that We have appointed an inviolable sanctuary, while men are being snatched away round about them? in falsehood then believe they, and unto the favor of Allah will they be ingrate?
68. And who is a greater wrong-doer than he who fabricates a lie against Allah or belieth the truth when it cometh unto him Will there not be in the Hell an abiding-place for the infidels?
69. And those who strive hard in Us, We shall surely guide them in Our paths; verily Allah is with the welldoers.

surah ankabut summary

In this article, we try to summarize the content of Surat Al-Ankabut, like other Meccan surahs, ankboot focuses on

  • the truth of faith, the belief and its coalition in the heart of the believer,
  • affliction and the necessity of patience, and among the contents of surah ankaboot it began by saying that oath is not a word that is spoken only by the tongue. Rather, the believer must know that he will be subjected to calamity. And hardships for Allah to test the reality of his faith, whether it remains firm or does it turn back on its heels.
  •  surah ankaboot has promised the believers to do penance for their sins, no matter how many. And multiplying their good deeds, and this is one of the greatest spiritual benefits of surah al ankabut
  • God has commanded the believer in surah al ankabut to be kind to parents and obeys them. He made honoring one’s parents one of the greatest gifts to God Almighty.
  • Then ankaboot moved to talk about the lies of the idolater of Quraish when they told the Muslims to abandon Islam. And we will bear your sins on the Day of Resurrection, and God knows that they are lying. God gave an example of patience and endurance of adversity to convey God’s message in the story of God’s prophets Noah and Abraham, the hardships they encountered while calling for the religion of God, and the great lessons and judgments contained in the two stories.
  • Then continued Surah ankabut narrating the stories of the prophets, Lot, Hod, Shuaib, and Saleh. And the difficulties they encountered while conveying the messages of Allah, Where the verses tell us that no one escapes from trials, not even the prophets.
  •  Ankaboot concentrated on the necessity of calling the People of the Book to Islam with great wisdom and good exhortation. And to show them the clear evidence of the sincerity of the Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
  • Then the verses are surmised by talking about the unbelievers being deceived by the temporary world. And threatening them with painful punishment on the Day of Resurrection. It also promised the believers to walk safely on the path of truth in this world and the hereafter.
